Camelot Theme Park, Lancashire

Flying Start marks: 8/10

Conclusion: A fantastic day out for the whole family, no matter what age. A great mixture of rides and entertainment. The Medieval Shows are not to be missed.

Camelot offers more than the average theme park. It boasts a great selection of rides, amusements, enchanting wizardry shows, medieval jousting,  jesters, fire eaters and even birds of prey!

Review: The park itself  was very clean and well staffed. Safety was priority as all the rides were tested before the park opened at 10am. Adults are priced at £20 and children under 1 metre in height go FREE! Senior citizens and those with disabilities are £13.50. Family tickets for 4, 5 and 6 guests are available at discounts, as are group bookings and corporate days. Fantastically priced considering this park offers you much more than just theme park rides – you can even pay using your Tesco Club Card Vouchers! There are only three amusements which require payment, these being the Go Karts, the driving school and the mini golf. All shows and the Birds of Prey centre are included in the price… what more, parking is free too!

Frugal fun is welcomed, as Camelot also invites you to bring your own food to eat in the picnic area if you want to save on the cost of purchasing from one of the many food outlets located inside the park. Lockers are available for storage or you can simply leave your picnic in the car and get your hand stamped to pop out and get it during the day.

The ride height restrictions, although very strict down to the cm adhering to health and safety rules, are also very fair. With height restrictions of around 1.2m, our family of two adults, a 10 year old girl and 13 year old boy were able to enjoy rides such as Knightmare and Whirlwind together. Camelot boasts a fantastic selection of rides for much younger children too. Click here to download a map of the park.

Facilities were clean with cleaners working throughout the day within the toilet blocks. All toilets are equipped for people with disabilities. Buggies and wheelchairs are available for hire on site.

The shows are a definite ‘not to miss’. It is advisable to plan your day by checking the information boards situated around the park for times of knights jousting and Merlins Wizardry. Merlin and Scoop astound visitors with their amazing wizardry twice-a-day and the jesters, fire eaters and jousters entertain once-a-day. The shows really are enjoyable, not just for the children. There are a few jokes in there for the adults too! Myself and my husband found the jester hilarious and the jousting was outstanding.

Here is a video of our two mini reviewers on the Whirlwind and a little insight into one of the Medieval Shows.

Worden Park, Leyland, Lancashire

Flying Start marks: 10/10

Conclusion: More than just a park – a fantastic, affordable and fun packed day out for all the family.

A beautiful, breathtaking, large, immaculately kept park featuring an amazing children’s play area, ride on steam model railway, hedge maze, arts and craft centre, coffee shop, walk, gardens and more. No wonder this historic park has held the Green Flag Award since the scheme launched in 1996.

Review: Family memories that will last forever. You will never forget the first time your child experienced their first ride on the model steam trains, or the time they got lost in the hedge maze! This park is outstanding, which is why it attracts over 1/4 million visitors each year. Worden parks 60 hectares of meadows, woodlands and playing fields are home to an array of family attractions, including a lawn tennis court and 11 football pitches within its grounds. The Play area (which is currently closed until June 2011 for refurbishment) boasts 22 pieces of equipment for children 0-6  including a large sand pit with sit-on sand diggers.  There are 14 pieces of equipment for children age 7-12 including a rope climbing frame and cableway (which you often see the adults trying out first!)

The historic maze is one of the few mazes of its kind which is free to enter. With high hornbeam planted walls, this maze certainly has you running around in circles to find the lime tree situated at its centre. Young children must be supervised at all times.

The Leyland Society of Model engineers offer their hobby for the public to enjoy free of charge, although there is a donation box which we would advise you drop a little something into, simply due to the utter dedication these guys have in keeping this family amusement available for you to enjoy . The model steam engines take you around the park, passing ponds with wildlife and the model engineers work station where you can see them working on their engines. Children and adults alike thoroughly love taking a ride on this model railway. You can find the engines running on Tuesdays, Sundays and Bank Holidays throughout the Spring and Summer months (dependant on weather).

The breathtaking walled garden dates back to 1777 and paints a picture of the’ then residing’ ffarington family’s lifestyle back in their day.  You can also enjoy the Shaw Brook Italian walk, which was also originally built for the ffarington family.

The Arts and Crafts centre offers you the chance to see various products being crafted, some of which are for sale. It is also a theatre and holds conferences and wedding receptions. Don’t forget to visit the quaint little coffee shop where you can stop for a drink, a bite to eat or an ice cream on your travels round the park.
